advent calendars

campout2[the view from our campsite last week]

Hi friends. I hope your Thanksgiving was as tasty and wonderful as mine was. Now it’s time to savor Christmas. Chris got the Christmas decorations out of the attic on Friday so most of our lights on the house are up and our tree is standing and decorated. The one bummer was a mouse ate my favorite faux berry wreath. Are mice really that dense? I can only image what happened to him after eating all that styrofoam. Yikes. And just for the record, I think I’d rather have frozen fingers after putting up our outside decorations than mosquito bites. Oh, the joys of living in Texas.

Anyway, I knew I wanted to do an advent calendar this year and after reading this post, I was completely inspired. Since then, I have been collecting projects, activities and service ideas to fill our advent calendar and I think I finally have it narrowed down. Hard to choose only 24!

Here is my list:

1. Decorate the kiddo’s room with tree and lights
2. Make pipe cleaner snowflakes (we have to make our own snow around here…)
3. Color on some Christmas coloring pages
4. Make and hang paper chains
5. Visit a friend
6. Play Memory Christmas style (this will be a freebie and tutorial later this week)
7. Shop for presents for Dad
8. Make and decorate gingerbread houses with friends
9. Read Christmas stories
10. Eat dinner picnic style by the Christmas tree
11. Bake cookies and deliver to friends
12. Play Christmas Bingo with friends
13. Eat a snowman ice cream dessert after dinner (tutorial on this coming too)
14. Bake and eat gingerbread men cookies
15. Make pine cone elves
16. Do something nice for a friend
17. Send some holiday cheer to far away friends in the mail
18. Watch a Christmas show
19. Go to the church Christmas Party
20. Build a sugar cube castle
21. Drink sparkling cider with dinner
22. Go on a drive to look at the Christmas lights around town
23. Do something nice for someone else
24. Eat a red and green Christmas dinner

The advent calendar itself is still in the works (ha!). I’m a little behind, right?! I really wanted to make this one out of wooden spools. But then I decided to be a bit more thrifty and make this one out of empty matchboxes. But I keep forgetting to get some at the grocery store! So I will probably be making a garland out of paper pockets. I’ll let you know how it goes.

What fun things do you have planned for December?
